Learn Asian American History Through Cookies! Schiappa Branch

April 16 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us in welcoming internationally recognized “cookie activist” Jasmine M. Cho who
will provide a brief talk and cookie decorating demonstration exploring how sugar
became her sweetest platform for healing and empowerment by sharing the historically
marginalized stories of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Jasmine’s presentation will focus on Toshio Mori (1910-1980). He is considered one of the first Asian American writers to be published in the United States with the book, Yokohama, California, a collection of short stories about Japanese Americans. He was set to publish just before the Pearl Harbor attack happened, which then delayed his publication to 1949 after he spent three years in
an internment camp. His story remarkably captures the resilient spirit of humans beyond identities of Japanese or American.
