Portrayal of Frances Perkins Tiltonsville Branch, August 23 at 11:30 a.m. JoAnn F. Peterson will bring one of the most amazing women of history to life in a firstperson portrayal of First Female Cabinet Member, Frances Perkins, who is often called “The Woman Behind the New Deal” and “The Mother of Social Security.” Perkins championed federal laws on old age pension, minimum wage, unemployment insurance, worker’s comp, child labor, and so much more. The presentation is set on August 14, 1935, shortly before the signing of the Social Security Act into law. You’ll hear about Perkins’ journey from social worker to suffragist to social reformer to politician, which made her uniquely qualified to be the first female Secretary of Labor during the Great Depression under Franklin D. BUSHY RUN BATTLEFIELD (bushyrunbattlefield.com) Bushy Run is Pennsylvania's only recognized Native American battlefield, where Colonel Henry Bouquet led British soldiers to relieve Fort Pitt and secure a victory over Native Americans in August 1763. Established in 1950, the museum showcases local Americana and memorabilia, and life-like figurines and artifacts that illustrate 18th-century colonial and Native American life. DEPRECIATION LANDS MUSEUM & PARK (dlmuseum.org) The site features interpreters in period costumes, historic buildings, an authentic log house, and reproduction structures, and preserves the early European settlement history in the Depreciation Lands for Revolutionary War soldiers. It also includes a research library with 18th-century resources and genealogical data. HARMONY MUSEUM (harmonymuseum.org) The Harmony Museum, established in 1809, showcases the history of the Harmony Society, the Mennonites, and notable visitors like George Washington. Historic Harmony Inc. manages other local properties, including an early 1800s Mennonite log cabin and church, alongside various historic buildings that house current businesses. FORT PITT MUSEUM (heinzhistorycenter.org/visit/fort-pitt) Step back in time at Point State Park and discover what life was like for 18th-century residents. Learn about the role of Pittsburgh during the American Revolution, the French and Indian War, and the Early Republic. THE HEINZ HISTORY CENTER (heinzhistorycenter.org) As Pennsylvania’s largest history museum and a Smithsonian affiliate, it showcases the heritage of western Pennsylvania through six floors of exhibits, hands-on activities, and events. Notable artifacts include the TV set from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and the world’s oldest jeep, making it a vibrant destination for all. MEADOWCROFT (heinzhistorycenter.org/visit/meadowcroft) Experience 19,000 years of history at North America’s oldest site of human habitation. Then tour three recreated villages to learn what life was like for our earliest ancestors. CAPTAIN WILLIAM VICARY MANSION (bchrlf.org) The Beaver County Historical Research & Landmarks Foundation, based in the 1826 Captain William Vicary Mansion, is Beaver County’s official Historical Society. Its mission involves researching local history, archiving, recognizing landmarks, and educating through programs. The Vicary House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 for its architectural significance. DUNCAN & MILLER GLASS MUSEUM (duncan-miller.org) The museum features a vast collection of Duncan & Miller glassware, tools, and memorabilia, offering visitors an immersive experience into the company's rich history and its impact on the region's industrial heritage. GIBSON HOUSE MANOR (gibsonhousemanor.org) Gibson House, built in 1855 by Dr. William Gibson, served as both a family home and office and was notably frequented by Samuel Clemons, or Mark Twain. In addition, it was a “safe house” for slaves as Jamestown was an important crossroad for the underground railroad. The Manor included secret design elements for hiding runaways and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. HISTORIC FORT STEUBEN (oldfortsteuben.com) Historic Fort Steuben was built in 1786 by the First American Regiment for the protection of surveyors sent by the Continental Congress to map the Northwest Territory. Visitors can tour the reconstructed fort to see the soldiers’ quarters, guardhouse, hospital, commissary, and Federal Land Office. Fort Steuben’s many exhibits, tours, and events tell the story of the daily life of the men who helped open the territories to settlement. You can use your PLSJ library card to check out Museum Experience Kits with passes for 2 adults and up to 6 children. Patrons can check out one kit for seven days. Library News 5 WHAT'S HAPPENING at the library Holiday Closing All PLSJ branches will be closed Friday, July 4 in observance of the holiday. What's Cooking? Register to Vote at PLSJ! Get empowered and register to vote at your library branch. Whether you’re a first-time voter or need to update your information, library staff are here to help you through the process. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library Build your child’s at-home library with the Dolly Parton's Imagination Library of Ohio! After enrolling, your child (birth to 5) will be mailed one age-appropriate book every month until their 5th birthday. Apply in person at your branch location or go to the library's website for a direct link. In Jefferson County, this reading program is administered by the United Way. Driving Around In Ohio, you can purchase a Dolly Parton's Imagination Library license plate. You'll be helping put more free books into the hands of children in your community! Ohio Strong Ohio is the state with the highest enrollment in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program. 20 million books have been mailed since Ohio’s program was established in August 2019. Serves 6-8 INSTRUCTIONS In a food processor, pulse the bell peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, and onion to a coarse puree. Transfer the contents of the food processor to a large bowl. Add the garlic, vinegar, and olive oil and stir to combine. Season to taste with salt, pepper, and hot pepper sauce. Refrigerate until chilled for at least one hour. To make the croutons, preheat the oven to 400°F. Place the bread on a baking sheet. Drizzle the butter over the bread, season with salt and pepper, and toss to coat evenly. Bake until golden and crisp, 10-15 minutes. Let cool. To make the salsa, in a small bowl, stir together the cherry tomatoes, serrano chile, green onion, garlic, cilantro, and lime juice. Set aside until ready to serve. Ladle the gazpacho into bowls, garnish with the croutons and a spoonful of the salsa, and serve. Golden Gazpacho with Torn Croutons & Cherry Tomato Salsa INGREDIENTS 2 yellow bell peppers, seeded and chopped 1 English cucumber, peeled, seeded, and chopped 4 yellow tomatoes, about 2 lb. total, chopped, with their juices 1 small yellow onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 2 tbsp white wine vinegar ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper Hot pepper sauce such as Tabasco For the torn croutons ¼ lb. day-old sourdough bread, crusts removed, and bread torn into small pieces 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted Salt and freshly ground pepper For the salsa 1 pint (12 oz) mixed cherry tomatoes, quartered 1 serrano chile, seeded and minced 1 green onion, thinly sliced 1 small clove garlic, minced 1 tbsp chopped fresh cilantro Juice of ½ lime With the bright yellow soup as a backdrop, the red cherry tomato salsa here offers an extra splash of color.
