Back to Basics: Making Bread Schiappa Branch, September 11 at 6 p.m. Grocery prices are rising. Cut costs, have fun in the kitchen, and learn the fundamentals of making bread from scratch using research-based information. Recipes and demonstrations will be led by the OSU Extension. Registration is required. Meet the Author Toronto Branch, October 8 at 10:30 a.m. Robin Yocum will visit PLSJ's Toronto Branch book club as the group discusses his book A Brilliant Death. Get insight and ask questions from the author himself during this program that is open to all. You don't have to read the book to attend but registration is required. Professional Pumpkin Carver Schiappa Branch, October 9 at 5 p.m. Have you watched television shows where professionals carved beautiful images into a giant pumpkin? Get ready to see magic happen when Gus 'Squashcarver Smithhisler' joins us to sculpt a pumpkin. Gus is a nationally recognized professional giant pumpkin carver and food artist with experience of more than 20 years. Registration is required. Cooking Demo Pastaio Restaurant, October 15 at 5:30 p.m. We're cooking up fall dishes at the restaurant. Chef Giuseppe, owner and operator of Pastaio Cucina Rustica Italiana will demonstrate and provide samples of an appetizer, soup, and entree with a burst of autumn flavors. A lesson about olive oils will also be on the menu. Registration will be taken at the Main Library only. Banned Book Discussion Main Library, September 25 at 6 p.m. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison Join us to discuss one of the Top 10 Most Challenged Books of 2023 from the American Library Association's list. Last year, ALA documented 1,247 attempts to censor materials and services at libraries, schools, and universities. Of the 4,240 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2023, The Bluest Eye rated the 6th on the list. Read to find out why. Breast Cancer Awareness Main Library, October 21 at 6 p.m. Dr. Vanessa Palmer of the Ohio Valley Health Center (OVHC) will discuss breast cancer awareness and breast health education focusing within the Black communities. Studies show that black women still hold the record for higher breast cancer death rates. The OVHC initiative aids with mammogram screenings, educational workshops, and support groups focused on early detection and prevention, aiming to reduce the disparity in breast cancer outcomes for free or at a low cost. Register to attend. Apple Cooking Demo Adena Branch, September 10 at 5 p.m. Dillonvale-Mt. Pleasant Branch, September 12 at 5 p.m. Learn how to make Fried Cinnamon Apples created by a famous restaurant! You'll get to sample these crispy treats too. Registration is required. Back to Basics: Car Care Schiappa Branch Parking Lot, October 14 at 6 p.m. Knowing basic car maintenance can help prevent emergencies and costly repairs. Learn how to change a tire, check tire pressure, oil, brake fluid, and more with the Team Automotive Mobile Van. Teens and adults are welcome to attend. Registration is required. Murder Mystery Theater Main Library, September 28 at 1 p.m. Can you solve the mystery? The Steubenville Library has on loan a historic manuscript, originally owned by Andrew Carnegie himself. The manuscript is from the 13th Century, telling a story of woe with a long history of owners having misfortune befall them. This evening is the opening of the exhibit about the manuscript, the origins of the story it tells, and the long history of where it has traveled. But what happens when one of the guests is found dead during the exhibit preview? Is it the curse? Or some human foul play? Join us for this theater performance by Roving Rogue Productions where you interact with the characters. This presentation is free to attend. Doors open at noon. Registration is required. The Toasted Traveler food truck will be in the parking lot for people to purchase and eat inside from 11 a.m. - 1:30 pm. Friends of PLSJ will also have a bake sale inside the library. A Look at the Past Schiappa Branch, September 3 at 6 p.m. Travel back in time through a collection of advertising items from businesses now long gone from our local area. Linda Hilty of the Jefferson County Historical Association will have items to pass around that are sure to bring back fond memories and stories from the past. Registration required. Tai Chi Main Library, Thursdays at 10 a.m. Certified instructor Mike Turrentine is leading an hour-long session of Tai Chi. Follow along to slow, intentional movements to help relax your mind and body. Wear comfortable clothing. Spacing for attendance is first come, first served.
