Distinguishing Job Characteristics

Maintains responsibility providing library bookmobile services throughout Jefferson County.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.

Provides bookmobile library services to persons that are homebound, in nursing homes, schools, daycare, or other facilities. Provides assistance to patrons in selecting materials, provides general information and discharges library materials.

Maintains good public relations with library bookmobile patrons.

Types book cards and overdue notices and maintains patron registration file. Compiles daily circulation figures and prepares monthly report.

Collects overdue fines and fees for replacement of lost books.

Orders, sorts, selects and places books, CD's, tapes, and videos into bookmobile or van for transporting. Secures and returns specially requested material.

Shelves and stacks books.

Prepares semi-annual bookmobile schedule and coordinates deliveries with schools, programs and other facilities using services. Provides newspapers and radio with weekly schedule and reports schedule changes.

Cleans books and prepares books for mending. Discards outdated materials in accordance with procedure.
 

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Operates Bookmobile in absence of Bookmobile Driver.

Patrons; students and parents; nursing home, day care and other facility staff; teachers; principals; school librarians; general public.

Patron records.
 

Working Conditions

Good working conditions but with regular exposure to weather conditions, some of which may be inclement. Regular exposure to traffic, road conditions, and normal driving hazards.

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly sits in a van for extended periods of time while making deliveries. The employee stands and walks regularly, and lifts heavy items. Employee casually converses verbally with others in person. Normal vision demands. 
 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: library practices; children's and adult literature; Dewey Decimal System.

Ability to: develop and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, coworkers, facility staff members, general public and other job contacts; exhibit good public relations as library representative; work independently; relate well with persons of varying age, economic and social backgrounds; exhibit a broad reading background; maintain confidentiality of confidential and sensitive subject matter.

Skill in: reading, communicating effectively in written and oral form; routine typing.
 

Qualifications

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: high school degree, GED or equivalent, with computer and other work related courses, one to three years of job related experience, and a successful driving record. A broad reading background and demonstrable ability to maintain good public relations.

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
