Distinguishing Job Characteristics

Drives bookmobile to deliver library materials to schools, nursing homes, daycare facilities and other locations throughout Jefferson County.
 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty listed below. Reasonable accommodations will be made for disabled persons, covered by the Americans With Disabilities Act, in accordance with its requirements.

Operates library bookmobile and van to deliver library materials to and from central library, branches and other locations throughout Jefferson County. Adheres to established schedule or as otherwise directed. Maintains good public relations with library bookmobile patrons.

Loads and unloads materials from bookmobile. Sorts and places books, CD's tapes, and videos into bookmobile or van for transporting.

Maintains bookmobile and van interiors and exteriors in clean and orderly condition. Fuels vehicles and checks oil, fluid, and coolant levels, tire pressure and performs other basic maintenance. Notes mechanical operating problems and notifies Director of maintenance needs.

Provides assistance to Bookmobile Clerk in checking books in and out and providing patron services.
 

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Assists with maintenance duties including painting and minor electrical and plumbing projects as needed.

Patrons; students and parents; nursing home, day care and other facility staff; teachers; principals; school librarians; general public.

Working Conditions

Good working conditions but with regular exposure to weather conditions, some of which may be inclement. Regular exposure to traffic, road conditions, and normal driving hazards.

The following physical demands are typically exhibited by position incumbents performing this job's essential duties and responsibilities. While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly sits in a van for extended periods of time while making deliveries. The employee stands and walks regularly, and lifts heavy items. Employee casually converses verbally with others in person. Normal vision demands required for safe driving. 
 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: city and county streets and roads; state and local driving laws and regulations; defensive and safe driving practices; general vehicle maintenance procedures.

Ability to: follow instructions; move and lift heavy books and boxes; develop and maintain effective working relationships with patrons, coworkers, facility staff members, general public and other job contacts; exhibit good public relations as library representative; work independently; maintain confidentiality of confidential and sensitive subject matter.

Skill in: driving a bookmobile.
 

Qualifications

An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may qualify an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: high school degree, GED or equivalent, with computer and other work related courses, one to three years of job related experience, and a successful driving record. A broad reading background and demonstrable ability to maintain good public relations.

Ability to document identity and employment eligibility within three (3) days of original appointment as a condition of employment in compliance with Immigration Reform and Control Act requirements.
 

Licensure or Certification Requirements

State Motor Vehicle Operator's License
