Memory Lab FAQ

A Memory Lab is a place to convert analog physical media (VHS tapes, film, photos etc.) to a digital format. For example, VHS tapes, film or photos degrade over time. Eventually they will no longer be able to be watched or viewed any longer due to the effects of time on the physical media. Digitizing these memories before they degrade ensures that a copy of them will live on long after the originals can no longer be used.

The Memory Lab is located in our Main Library at 407 South 4th Street Steubenville, Ohio.

The Memory Lab is completely free if you bring your own flash drive or save your memory to the cloud. We do offer flash drives for $5 each upon request.

Yes. There will always be a staff member to assist you in completing your project. We want to make sure patrons receive all the help they need.

Maybe. It depends on whether the Memory Lab is available and if we have a staff member available to assist you.

VHS conversion takes as long as your VHS tape is. If your VHS tape is 1 hour long, it will take 1 hour, 2 hours will take 2 hours and so on.
Photo and film conversion takes 15 minutes to hours depending on the complexity and number of photos, magazines or books to be digitized.

We have an El Gato Video capture device for VHS digitization.
We have a ScanSnap SV600 photo scanner for photo digitization.
